Is 125 amp breaker in a 100 amp Main Panel OK?
A Question for all the experts out there. I want to squeeze as much amperage out of my existing main panel as I can. I have a 100 Amp Gould main panel (G2020MB1100) with a 100 Amp main breaker. I was reading the langthy label on the panel and I came across the following statement:
"Suitable for use as service equipment, when permitted by Artical 384 of National Electrical Code and when main breaaker (125 amp max ) is used w/ retainer clip (cat #MBR1) maximum rating of panel is rating of main breaker."
Elseware there is also a statement that says "Ratings: 100 Amps Max".
So my question is, is there some way to get 125 amps out of my 100 amp main panel? What is a retainer clip? And if 125 Amps is not possible why is there this confusing statement in the service panel?
Thanks for any answers that anyone can give.

Hi
If you have a 100 amp breaker that mean the wire from the meter is for 100 amps.
if you change the breaker to 125 amps YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE SERVICE WIRE FROM THE METER and the STAND PIPE.
100 amps used # 6
125 amps used # 4

Thanks for the feedback Pgtek. I will be sure to have the power turned off at the pole before I do anything. It sounds like you are saying that a 120Amp main braker is OK in my 100 Amp panel. But can you help me understand what is a retainer clip?
