Outdoor Wiring Question

I am building a ramada over our back patio and would like to install lighting with an outdoor switch. I have already buried 12/2 outdoor romex in conduit from a GFCI protected outlet. I would like to conceal the electrical wire inside my rough cut timbers. I have also already bored and routered where this is necessary, but I want to know if I must use conduit or if I can leave the outdoor rated romex bare in these channels? Is there any metal clad rating that is sufficient for outdoor use that would suffice? I want to avoid having to make the channels enormous.

If the wire is a least 1.25 inches from the surface you should be OK.

You shouldn't have outdoor wire in conduit. A short section is okay for protection, but if that underground run is long I would change it. The inspector might not allow it.
