lots o' wires

just trying to replace a light fixture here. upon removing the old fixture, found three 3 wires in the box, one is from a gang box outlet on the wall. never had a problem hooking up lights before but this one has me stumped. what is the red wire for? hooked up all blacks and whites, hooked red to the fixture ground, and now the light works but the switch does not. Please help.

Try connecting the Black fixture-lead to the Red wire, and the White F-L to the White wires.

Good Luck & Enjoy the Experience!!!!!!!!!!!

A red wire should be a hot wire. It should never be a ground wire. Most people will use a red wire for a switched hot.

Connecting a red wire to a grounding wire is a fairly serious suicide attempt. Never, ever, ever, ever do it.
