wire size to subpanel from main breaker panel

what size of wire is needed to hook up a 100amp subpanel
from a 200amp main breaker panel. The distance is about
60ft?

For now, I'm going to assume that you really want and need a 100-amp subpanel (i.e., it is fed from a 100-amp breaker and you really need 24KW of power), and not merely that you bought a panel rated for a maximum of 100 amps (which can be wired for less).

#2 copper if in a cable assembly or if terminations are not explicitly marked as 75 degrees. #3 copper if individual wires and terminations are explicitly marked 75 degrees. Some inspectors sometimes allow smaller wires in certain situations (such as #2 aluminum or #4 copper), so check when you get your permit.
