update wiring to 100 amp

Just listed house to sell and found out that we have 60 amp service and need to update. What do we need to do to update house to 100 amp to be able to sell house?

You will have to replace the main panel with a new main, and have the electric company replace the meter. Honestly the panel is probably pretty old anyway, so plan on buying new breakers as well. The wireing throughout the house would only need to be changed if it has other isses (bad wiring or insulation for example) but does not need to be changed for the purpose of upgrading amps.

Who told you that the service had to be updated to 100 amp to sell it?

Unless there is a local requirement for this you don't have to do anything. Now if a buyer wants you to do this to make the deal, then you have to decide if you want that deal or if you want to wait.

If you do go ahead with this to make a sale (or if there is a local requirement that this be done) then hire an electrician. Doing this as part of a house sale is not something you want to even consider doing yourself.

I completely agree with Racraft.

I will say, these #%*@# home inspectors will really play up the issue of the service if it is 60 amps or fuses. It would probably be worth it to spend the $1000 now to upgrade to 100 amps. A potential buyer will want to knock off $5k if the service was too old.
