Question 3 lights; 1 switch

I am remodeling a room and want to install two new lights, plus replace existing one, for a total of three lights to be operated by a single switch. Should I install a junction box and run the switch wire to it and then branch out separately to each light, or should I run the wire from one light to the next to the third?

Unless there is an absolute need for a junction box, one should be avoided. Each and every junction is a potential failure point. While a properly made connection is unlikely to fail, the box itself becomes an issue for some people, as it needs to remain permanently accessible.

I suggest no junction box in your case.
