New Stove
I am going to purchase a new stove. The 40-amp circuit to which my old stove is connected consists of a white wire, a black wire, and a green wire. Is it safe to install a 3-pronged receptacle for the new stove (there is no receptacle now, just a junction box where the connection is made) , or should I get an electrician to redo the circuit for a 4-pronged receptacle? Also, is the 40-amp circuit sufficient?

Code grandfathers in the three-wire stove circuit for older homes. But there is no doubt that a four-wire stove cirucit is safer, if it is practical to replace it. Modern stoves come with two sets of installation instructions, one for each case.
The 40-amp circuit is sufficient for most, but not all, cooking appliances. Consult the installation manual of your new stove for details.
