For 12 gauge house wiring they use a 20 amp breaker.
14 ga wire 15 amp breaker.
10 ga wire 30 amp breaker.

You should only have 30 amp breakers for special purpose 120 volt circuits, or for 240 volt circuits. It is against code to have a 30 amp breaker protecting general purpose lighting or regular 15 and/or 20 amp receptacles.
