You must have a outside disconnect by code. Is your wire long enough to run to this disconnect, then a whip to the A/C?

Every splice increases the chance of failure, and it is usually considered bad-practice to put splices where they are not necessary.

If you do make a splice, put it in a permanently accessible junction box, and use the proper size wire nuts.

The inspector will probably ask why there is a junction box in a line that would typically not have one. This may cause him to question other aspects of the installation as well.

splice will end up being about 12 foot into ceiling.

The splice by itself does not violate code. But because we know nothing of the where and why and how, there are still dozens of other ways it might violate code.
