Exclamation Wiring Question

I currently have a unfinished basement and i am thinking of adding some receptacles.
I have a 12/2 running into the basement. It is not hooked up in the panel as of yet. The panel has a 20amp circuit open. The main panel is in the garage. I have a few questions.

1. Does it matter if i use 12/2 or should i use 14/2? (Currently have 1000 ft of 12/2 on hand).

2. I have a box of 15a/125v receptacles, or do i need to get 20a receps? (BGDR)

I do not plan to use anything special on the receps. I do not mind using 12/2 just wondering if that would be ok?

There is no reason not to run the 12 and every reason to run it, namely because you have to use 12 or better on a 20A circuit. The 15A recepts are ok though.

two point of note.
In an unfinished basement receptacles must be GFCI protected.
If you are in Canada then you must use 20 amp T slot receptacles on a 20 amp circuit. You could use the 12/2 and a 15 amp breaker and regular receptacles.
