outlet problem

forgive me for not knowing anything electrical but i need help, old home, just moved in, tried to plug in dryer and thats not happening as the prongs were shaped different, bought a new wall socket and it fits plug, shut breaker off removed old socket and there are 3 wires, white,black,and a solid bare wire,new socket has 4 openings what next

Put the 3 wire receptacle back and get a 3 wire cord for the dryer. You cannot legally change to a 4 prong receptacle if you do not have separate white and (bare) ground wires. It IS oK however to rewire the dryer for 3 wire operation. If the dryer does not have a wiring diagram on it, get an electrician because you do have to change the set-up in the dryer to do this.
