Add outlet to existing circuit

I have a 15 amp circuit with 14 gauge wire which I would like to add an outlet onto. Can I add on a 15 amp outlet to this circuit using 12 amp wire? Not that I wouldn't use #14, but I would like to use up some #12 I have left over from another project.

Code allows you to do this, but most of us here don't recommend it, for many reasons.

It's just a confusion issue, not a real safety issue. Because of this, some inspectors frown on mixing wire sizes on a circuit. If you're never ever going to have a need for that #12, I'd go ahead and use it. But it you think you'll ever use it for some other project, I'd suggest you buy some #14.
