12 Amp Vacuum Cleaner Motor

can some plese help me solve this problem.
i have a vacuum cleaner motor that has a white wire ,black wire, green wire
what i want to do is put a varriable speed control on this motor for a project i am doing.how do i splice into cord so this can be done.i spliced into cord & hooked black to black & white to white & green to green but still no luck.
at one time i had it working but for the life of me can' seem to know what i did.i spliced several places with different wires but can' seem to get it back going again on variable.will run fine wide open but no control on switch.
unless the switch went bad.
thanks for your help. mccoy

This type of motor cannot usually be connected to a speed control.

If your motor has brushes, its no different then an electric drill with a motor speed controller.
Check the switch and the Cord/plug, I would use one rated for 20 amps.
The controller must be rated over 12 amps and for motor use, or it may not last long.
