electrical switch replacement

I have an old hall switch that has a black and white wire on top and bottom of the switch and on the top of the other side of the switch I have a red wire. The switch I got for replacement only has a top and bottom on one side with no other hookup except the ground screw. Any ideas on how to wire the new switch?

Thanks,

Jim

There are different types of switches. You will probably need to get one that matches what is there. What does the switch control? Are there any other switches that control the same device?

Thanks for responding. The switch operates the light at the bottom of a staircase. There is a switch at the top and bottom of the staircase that operates the same light fixture. I guess you are right...i need to get a similar switch. The one I got is the more modern wide flat switch.

You need a more modern wide flat 3 way switch.
Note the screw colors that the wires are on.
