wire color inquiry

hello, my first posting and I am glad I found this. I have a 1,000' pro roll of #12 THHN white wire. I was wondering if I plan to use this in thinwall conduit can I save some money and instead of purchasing some black #12, can I just use an permanent black marker and color about 2' on each end of the white to identify it as a black wire in each run?

This is not allowed by U.S. code. White wires are allowed to be reidentified as hot only when part of a cable assembly.
