Self Grounding

Just what is a self-grounding outlet and does your whole electrical system need to be previously grounded to use???

Self grounding does NOT mean that the receptical creates its own ground.

As I understand it, it simply means that, when installed in a METAL box that is grounded (ground wire screwed to box), the receptical gets the ground from the screws that attach it to the box, without directly attaching a ground wire to the receptical.

That said, yes, you do have to have a good ground at the box already.

Even when installed properly it's best that you connect a ground wire to the ground screw on the receptacle. Self-grounding is pretty much a waste in residential wiring.
