lights fine with load, dim without

I am having an issue with residential electrical. All lights in the house are fine as long as all are on together, or several on at the same time. If only one or two lights are on, they are all dim.
Any idea what the problem could be?

Fill in some details. Are all the lights in the whole house affected or just one room? Are any lights on dimmers? Are any lights on 3-way switches?

This is an unusual symptom, so we need lots of info.

Sounds like an open neutral or loose When all lights are on they are fine if you start turning off switches one by one you may be able to locate the area that is creating this problem

I agree could be an open neutral. Since all the light seem to be affected it could be the main neutral to the house.

EDIT
After thinking about this I changed my opinion. This could be an open hot not an open neutral.

Maybe they're wired in series?
