Subpanel Question

When going from the main panel to a subpanel less than two feet away, does the subpanel supply need to be protected by conduit?

The subpanel supply may be individual conductors in conduit, or it may be a cable assembly (think very thick romex). It can't be individual totally unprotected conductors.

If the distance is very short, you might consider using an 'offset nipple' that would let you put the two panels essentially side by side.

I like winnies method of application " offset nipple" . However, if you find yourself having to use conduit from the main panel to the sub-panel because the offset will not give you enough clearance...just save yourself ALOT of calcuations and keep the nipple length under 24" and you will be able to fill that conduit to 60% of their cross-section area and will not have to do any additional derating factors.

Good luck on your project...
