Question Tightening up main lugs in 200 amp panel

What are the necessary safety precautions to take when tightening the main lugs in my main breaker box? The feeds are aluminum, and I can hear a buzzing noise coming from the main breaker. The breaker is not hot, but I am assuming with the wires being aluminum and the house being 40 years old, that the main lugs probably need tightening. If I am wrong in my assumption, then any info would be helpful.
