Service entrance question

I am having 400 amp underground service installed in my new construction house. How far can the service entrance cable run inside the basement from the meter boxes to the panels?

If there is no main breaker outside, the answer is the shortest possible distance. Most inspectors will say this is less than 10 feet, some will say less than 5 feet. Check with your local inspector and power company planner/engineer for their policies as well. This run must also be in rigid conduit for protection.

You may need to put a main breaker on the outside of the building. You can get meter bases with integral main breakers just for this purpose. Your interior panels then become subpanels and need isolated neutrals and 4 conductor feeds.

and also to add the inside panel could also be a main lug only panel if you did the service disconnect at the meter cab.

On the rigid pipe comment......in VA we can run SER inside the home and if in the basement we drill through the joists to the interior panel location and do not require rigid conduit.

Please consider NEC Art. 230.72 (C), Acess to Occupants---"Each occupant shall have acess to ( their) Service Dis-Connecting Means."

Exterior Dis-connects in the form of C-B's will satisfy the above Art., and will protect the interior Feeder Conductors so that they can be extended for any distance.

Good Luck & Learn & Enjoy from the Experience!!!!!!!!
