Fixture connection with wood on one side

I have noticed an existing fixture that has the connections made under the metal back of the fixture but the open beam wood is the other side. In other words the connection is not enclosed in metal, it has one side that is wood. Is this okay?

No it is not. ALL connections must be in a box.

Depending on the shape and size of the fixture's canopy, it might be possible to mount a pancake box to the beam and them mount the fixture to the box.
