convection oven

I'm getting a small countertop convection oven, 220V, 11.8 amp.
The circuit I want to use was formerly used for a baseboard heater. It is a
20 amp double pole, 12/2 wire. The plug on the oven is an NEMA 6-15P.
Will the 12/2 wire work since the white wire is hot and there is no neutral?
Also, the dealer thought I should downgrade the circuit to 15 amp. Should I do this or is the 20 amp okay to keep?

thank you,

Downgrade the breaker to 15 amps, 240 volts and change the receptacle to match the plug on the oven.
