Circuit Requirements ?

I'm doing an addition and have the following rooms/requirements:

Bedroom:
5 - 15 amp duplex outlets
1 Ceiling Fan with light
1 Smoke Detector
2 EconoHeat panels ( 400 watts each @ 120 volts )

Hallway (existing bath converted to hallway/laundry)
Washer & Gas Dryer - Existing circuit can be relocated for these
Tankless Gas WH - Less than 2 amps
2 existing GFCI outlets
3 ceiling light fixtures ( 2 existing so I will just extend wires )
1 new Smoke Detector ( outside bedroom )

Bathroom
1 GFCI 15 amp outlet
1 wall light fixture
1 3'x5' Floor Heating - 1.5 amps ( requires GFCI protection )
1 exhaust fan ( located in attic )

I will wire all of this with #12 wire. How many circuits do I need?

I believe I can use just one circuit for the bedroom and one for the Bath - is this correct, or do I need to separate the bath light from the GFCI outlet?

Can I put the SD's on the bedroom circuit?

How many circuits you "need" depends on all of the information you supplied, plus square footage. Code minimum is one general purpose 15-amp circuit per 600 square feet, or one general purpose 20-amp circuit per 800 square feet.

How many circuits you "want" depends on what you plan to plug into all those receptacles. How many you want is almost certain to be a lot higher than how many you need.

More is almost always better.

Don't forget AFCI in the bedrooms.

All smoke detectors must be interconnected, and thus must be on the same circuit. Check locally to see if this circuit needs to be AFCI. The NEC says yes, but not all cities do.

You need a dedicated circuit for laundry area receptacles only.

The bathroom GFCI is not allowed to be on a 15-amp circuit. It must be a 20-amp circuit. There are many other bathroom codes too, but the simplest solution is to dedicate one 20-amp circuit to each bathroom, with nothing outside of that bathroom on that circuit.

You need to read more books. Start with Wiring Simplified, a $6 green paperback available in the electrical aisle of most Home Depot stores.

Hi John,

OK, the area of the addition is about 230 sq. feet and the total area of the house will be only about 1800. Currently there are plenty of circuits to serve the existing house ( built to code in 2000 ) so this is what I'm going to do.

Add a new 20 amp circuit for the bedroom with an AFCI breaker. (12'x15')
I'll also update the existing bedroom circuits to AFCI. I may do the same for all living area general use circuits (excluding kitchen and baths).

Add a new 20 amp circuit for the bathroom and put a GFCI outlet in wired so that it also protects the radiant electric floor. The light fixture and fan will also be on that circuit but will not be GFCI protected.

I'll extend the existing SD circuit to serve the 2 new units.

I'll use the existing Laundry circuit to serve the new laundry area - existing area will be converted to a storage cabinet wall so the existing outlets will be removed.

3'x5' mat uses 1.5 amps total - very efficient.
