help breaker not shutting off

I have an outlet in my bedroom there is nothing on that outlet. It has melted the neutral wire and the insulator on the outlet. With all that the breaker never tripped. I have 12 gauge wire and a 20 amp circut breaker. I replaced the outlet but have no idea why the breaker would not have tripped. On that one circut in the bedroom there is 6 outlets and 1 light. Thanks for any help.

The breaker never tripped because you drew more than 20 amps. It's very easy to overheat connection and not trip the breaker. If the connection was loose it would overheat.
