generator info please

Has anyone used a generator that runs the entire house?

I am looking for the proper setup for a home to be able to have a generator wired into the whole house system that whenever there is a loss of power for more than a minute it takes over and runs the house.

Thanks

How big is the house?
What size is your service?
What electrical appliances do you have?
How much electric heat?
How much A/C?
Do you have nat.gas on site?

You should do a load calculation for your electrical needs to determine how big a genset you will need.
A unit to run the average home will be in the $10k-$12k range installed.

florida home

we have a florida townhome that has 6 rooms and this is a real problem down here laterly with power and storms.

If I get these numbers together is there anyone to contact to do this for me-just an electrical contractor-or who? Also is there a certain brand to look for.

Thanks for all your advise.

Kohler and Genrac are some brands. The installation has to be properly designed and permitted. Need a transfer switch so you do not backfeed the power line.

What are you condidering for a fuel source? Probably not allowed to store enough gasoline or diesel on property. That leaves propane and natural gas. Do either of these survive hurricanes and coastal flooding?

THANKS SO MUCH! GREAT IDEA. I never thought about using propane or natural gas. I will look up these 2 names and I really think the propane option may work best for me.

This site is the best because of all of you that help others.
IT IS APPRECIATED!!
