generators

I was told you could plug a generator into the clothes dryer (220V) outlet and turn off the main circuit breaker. I see the problem if you forget to turn off the main breaker. What are problems with connecting it this way?

The problem is it is illegal and you could kill someone.

Do not do this under any circumstances.

Whoever told you this is ignorant of the NEC and common safety. Don't follow their advice.

First problem is it is completely illegal, and a good way to KILL someone. The power company suffers potential injuries and deaths every year from people backfeeding the lines. They try to take appropriate precautions. Joe sixpack who stumble across a down line being backfed by you may not be so lucky.

The ONLY proper way is to use an approved type transfer switch.
