Blackened Duplex Plate

I've seen blackened marks on duplex plates in several homes I've been in. The marks are usually about the size of a quarter. The receptacles usually are working fine, nothing feels loose, and no fuses are blown. Any suggestions?

These are burn marks, probably from repeated sparks. They might be because someone is plugging in and unplugging a device when it is turned on, or they might indicate a receptacle that is in need of replacement because the connections inside are getting loose.

Might not be burn marks. Could be dirt from air flowing though because the house old and poorly insulated/sealed.
