200A Meter Socket

Long time lurker, 1st time poster.

I'm in the process of building a new home. What's the consensus on grounding a 200A meter socket? I'm using PVC conduit from the pole, underground, to the meter, and then from the meter to the 200A load center inside. Is it acceptable to run a bare groundwire with the hotwires inside the conduit and ground in the 200A load center? Or must the ground wire be ran outside the conduit? I have some reference books, but they not clear on this issue.

thx,
Joe Michel

It's totally up to your power company. You have to ask the local inspector or power company engineer. In my area, the meter box remains ungrounded; but other power companies will have different policies.

In my area, it is not necessary to run a separate ground specifically for the meter base. The grounding requirements apply to the panel. Since the neutral in the meter base is bonded to the meter base housing and the neutral in the panel is grounded, that is considered sufficient.

Same in my area.
Nothing to the meter, ground rods and water bond to the main panel.
