Smoke Detector Problems

We have lived in our house for the last 2.5 years and have had no problems with our smoke detectors until recently. Two months ago our hard-wired detectors went off a couple of times for no apparent reason. They sounded for about 5 seconds and then stopped. Ten minutes later, the same. We had all of them replaced to avoid any more false alarms. Two weeks later, they went off again for no apparent reason. Again, they sounded for 5 seconds, went off and then came on again for a few seconds about 5 minutes later. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Are these hardwired with battery backup or straight hardwired?

If they have a battery backup, try changing all the batteries.

Are they mounted on the wall or ceiling? In either case, does the wall or ceiling back on unheated space (attic, outside wall, etc.)?

Any chance one is mounted near the kitchen or bathroom? If you have a basement, is there one near the furnace/boiler?

Post again and we'll see if we can track it down.

All five of them are straight hardwired and all five have been replaced since the first 'episode'. They are all mounted on the ceiling and none of them back on unheated space. There are two in the basement and one is outside the furnace room door. Each time the detector has gone off has been in the middle of the night and as such we haven't been able to pin point which one goes off first.
