Hot Outlet

I have an outlet in my enclosed patio that is getting hot. I had a space heater plugged into it and there is an odor from it. Do I need to just replace the outlet or rewire? It is the second outlet in a chain of 3. Thank you for any information.

A space heater is a very large load. Probably the largest cord-and-plug connected load in your whole house. It should not be run unattended, and is not a good long-term solution for heating this room. And should not be used for more than an hour or two at a time.

I recommend that you replace all receptacles in the chain with high-quality commercial-grade receptacles, and use the side screws (not the holes in the back) to connect the wires. You need the best connections you can get.

Replace the receptacle, using "device-leads" best done with standed THHN wire for flexibility. The objective is to avoid " in-and-out" connections on the device terminals. I would invest in "crimping" pliers and use crimp-type lugs for a "solid" connection at the terminals-- a loose terminal connection may be the cause of the heating problem.
Twist the 2 Black/White wires together,and wire-nut 6" device-leads to the Black/White wires.With this connection, a defective device-connection will not open the circuit.

I hope you don't have Aluminum wiring.

Good Luck, & Learn & Enjoy from the Experience!!!!!!!
