Heat pump breaker keeps triping .. please help.

sorry, not sure if this should be posted in heat and cooling forum or not .. but Since last night, our heat pump was acting up. The breaker kept triping and finally this morning it completely stopped working. Every time we turn it on, the breaker trips. I had the same issue last year and change the breaker and the problem was resolved. So this morning I went to homedepot, bought a new breaker and had it replaced but that didnít help. As soon as we turn on the heat pump, it trips. Any idea what could be causing the problem? Is it possible that my new breaker is defective?

A problem with the heat pump. It is drawing too much current.

Possible, yes. Likely, no.

I suggest that you call a heat pump repair company, unless you really want to try diagnosing and fixing this problem yourself.

If you feel qualified to do it, try changing out the start capacitor. That's often the problem, they're not but a couple of dollars (compared to a service call) and it's not that hard to do.

If you feel qualified.
Nothing is cheap about getting shocked.
