110 from 220 ??

I have a 220v line to my garage to run a dust collection system in the basement. I need a 110 outlet in the same vicinity.
Is it possible to peel 110 off one leg of the 220??
The devices would never be on at the same time.
Thanks.

Probably not. The dust collector doesn't use a neutral, so chances are none was run. If you are a very optimistic person, check to see how many wires, and what color they are, are in the dust collector circuit.

John, Thanks for the info.. You were right. No neutral. There was a black, a black with a red stripe, and a ground wire.
I don't want to take a lot of your time, but what is the difference between a ground and a neutral and is there a short explanation for why you couldn't use the ground for the neutral?? The neutral and the ground both terminate to the same ground bar in the service panel.
Thanks again.

Current flows on the neutral in normal operation. Current does not flow on the ground except during a fault. Using the grounding wire as a neutral is a safety hazard, although it's often done by people who either are ill-informed, or unconcerned, about safety.

Thanks for the explanation. I will be running a separate circuit for the 110. Not that difficult, and I had to run another anyway, so I guess I'll pull two. But it's cold out there and wanted to keep my time to a minimum for this one.
Am I to assume if there was a neutral wire, that could have been an option??

If there had been a neutral, I would have had to ask you a bunch more questions before saying whether or not it would have been a legitimate option.
