Fixture connection

When connect a fixture to a metal connection box, do all the wire connections have to be in the box itself or can some be outside the box, but under the fixture flange. It would still have a metal back (the fixture and sheetrock and the metal box. This would seem to be safe, but some guy at a lighting store, said they all should be in the box. The manufacture even has a connection for both black and white wires and they would be very hard to get in the box.

Thanks for any response.

It depends on the fixture, and whether it is designed to contain connections. Most are not. And if not, all connections must be in the electrical box.
