Knowing when sump pump is running

I have a new sump pump in the cellar, and I would like to know how often it runs. I have only heard it run once or twice when I was right near it. It is 115 V and is plugged into a single outlet, and certainly works as there is no water in the pit. Is there a meter/timer of some sort that I can install between the pump plug and the outlet. Would this tell me the number of sec/min or times that the pump runs in a givin period of time? Is there some other way to gain this information?

There is an inline meter called the "Kill-A-Watt" you can buy online or at some electronics stores that does what you want; mine was something like $25.

If you just want to confirm its on, buy a clamp on ampmeter.

do know the pump will only run when the water level is too high. For MOST of the time it will be off.
