3 way Lamp Switch

How does a 3 way lamp socket work?
How do you get 3 levels of light from the socket and bulb by roating the lamp switch?
How is a 3 way bulb constructed for this purpose?
Thanks in advance.

3 way lamp switch

The 3 way or 3 position switch, rather than making or breaking a connection similar to a regular spst switch, steps from one contact to another, and then to both contacts for the brightest lumens. In other words, one click it engages contact #1 illuminating the small filament in your bulb. Another click engages contact #2, which illuminates the large filament. Another click engages both the contact #1 & 2 illuminating both filaments. Another click - dark.
Three way bulbs, if you notice the base, will have a different contact configuraton from a regular bulb. This allows for the switching.
