The cost of an adequately sized solar installation is so great that it must be in continuous use for many years to be cost effective. Given that emergency use will be very infrequent: diesel, LP, natural gas or gasoline fired generators are much more cost effective, dependable and portable for emergency use. Engine driven generators are reliable in foul weather when solar is useless, and foul weather is often the cause of grid failure. I think solar is a good solution to a number of energy problems, but emergency power is not one of them.
