Checking wire for continuity

I've lived in my house for almost a year now. Several months ago, I noticed a wire in my basement that was not connected to anything. I tested it and there was no current. The wire runs from my basement and vanishes into my finished garage.

Last week I was in my attic and noticed a wire that was not connected to anything. I tested this wire and there was no current running through it. My guess is that this is the same wire I found in my basement. They are both 12-2. How can do I test to see if it is the same wire?

Thanks for your help.

Use a voltmeter on it's resistance setting and test for continuity.

Does the wire enter the attic above where it disappears below? Sounds like some electrician was nice enough to run a spare wire that could be very useful. Would have been even nicer if he would have terminated it in junction boxes with a description of what it was written on the cover.
