Replacing can with track

In my basement, a single can illuminates the mantle. I would like to replace it with an L-shaped stretch of track and several track lights. For once, I'm trying to anticipate problems *before* I start. Can you experts suggest anything I should be prepared for? The goal is to disrupt the ceiling as little as possible. Thanks.

You'll have to move the wiring from inside the can light j-box to a permanently accessible j-box which feeds the track lighting. In most situations, I think this would be okay. You may run into trouble if the existing wires are too short. The upside is that you will have a big access hole in the ceiling where the old can was to fish wiring for the track.

You could start by disassembling the can and looking up into its j-box to see what wiring is there.
