Unhappy Stripped screw on electrical outlet cover plate

I am attempting to change the electrical outlet cover plate. Unfortunately, the screw that attaches the cover plate to outlet is stripped. I also do not possess many electrical tools beyond a flat or phillips screwdriver.

How do I remove the screw without having to replace entire electrical outlet?

Any assistance, would be greatly appreciated.

if by stripped you mean the screw head is damaged, you may be able to break the cover off the receptacle exposing more of the screw head. try grabbing the head with a pair of pliers. turn off the breaker first and wear eye protection. the covers are cheap and come with a new screw.

Often the cover plate will stick to the wall. This is sometimes because the paint is wet when the plate was installed. Try loosening the cover around the edges and then applying pressure to pull it out away from the wall as you turn the screw counter-clockwise to remove it. The pressure on the screw might help it release.

The worst case scenario is that you break the cover plate and have to replace it. Just be careful. The broken plastic edges can be sharp.

For less than a dollar, why fuss over it? Break the cover plate, remove and replace the outlet and cover plate and watch the game.
