Red Wire???

You guys have helped me before...so I thought I'd try again...

I have a junction box in the kitchen that has 3 switches...2 of them work one does not. One of the working switches opperates 2 lights...I would like to put those 2 on seperate switches so they do not both need to be on.

So I open the box and there are 5 leads into this box 5 white wires and 5 black wires...no biggie can figure that out.

The problem is there is an additional red wire??? What is that...does anyone know?

Usually a red wire is used as a switched hot wire. The answer would depend on where it is connected.

You may not be able to do what you want. Whether you can will depend on the wiring. If you tell us ALL the wires in the box and how they are connected we can sort it out.
