Upgrade to 200 amp

Hello All

I have a 100 amp service now and want to upgrade to 200 amp service. My question is does the wire from the pole to the meter have to be changed? If so does the power company (PECO) make me pay for this?

Thanks Kevin

The wire from the pole to the house is typically POCO property and they replace it at their discretion. Everything from the weatherhead to the panel, with the exception of the glass meter itself, is the homeowner's responsibility.
Some area POCO's do provide the wiring down to, and including, the meter pan. But I think this is a rare case.

If you already have #1 aluminum, that's probably what you get. If you have #4, they should replace their wire. You could even have the inspector note on the turn-on card the new load calculation if you are increasing the continuous load. Otherwise, when the poco comes to splice it, they should notice if they are splicing 4/0 to their #4. There is a big difference. So they might drop new 1/0 Al if you don't have it already.

The power company is not required to use NEC sizes.

I just put in a 200 amp service. In my case, the POCO put in 4/0 AL, and the meter, and that was it. I was responsible for everything else, meaning conduit, trenching, meter socket, etc. Call your POCO, they will tell you what you need to do.

Good point. In many areas for underground the customer is responsible for everything (except transformer) to the POCO point. This could be a 1000' or more.
