speaker wire

Building a new house and I want to run speaker wire. Should I use some 16/2 or 16/4 for the runs? I am wiring to about 8 rooms.

Are you going to have volume controls in each room? Are you planning a centralized audio system? I would run a 4-conductor speaker wire (I prefer something a bit larger than 16AWG) from the central location to each volume control (home run rather than daisy-chain) and then a pair of 2-conductor wires from each volume control to each of the speakers associated with that volume control. Make sure you use speaker wire rated for in-wall use.

Panel Upgrade

I have a 100 AMP main in my electrical panel and I want to upgrade my panel to a 200 AMP main. I know the feed from the street will support this. I can do the work myself but what I want to know is about the permits? What do I need to do in that regard? Will the city want someone licensed to do this? With general construction you just pull the permits, do the work yourself and as long as it is up to code it will pass inspection. Is it the same in my case? Joe.

Wiring in soffits?

I'm running some NMSC through a soffit. The soffit encloses some ductwork in my basement ceiling. Can I run the cables along the bottom of the soffit cavity or do I have to go up to the joists? (It may seem a trivial difference, but the way the ducts are arranged, it would be a lot simpler if I could run the cables along the bottom of the cavity) They would lie on top of the horizontal memebers that form the bottom side of the soffit. I'm not sure what the code requires for this (the 'simplified' code book I have doesn't mention anything about soffits). Thanks.
