Wiring a welder

A buddy bought a welder that runs off 220. The wiring for the outlet is white, black and red, however the wiring for the welder is white, black and green (ground I'm assuming). How does he wire the plug (welder came without one) to work with this outlet?

Thanks,
Byam

The house wiring needs a ground. Green or bare. Is one present in the box?

Your post is too lacking in detail for us to give an accurate answer.
What is the draw of the welder?
Is it straight 240v?
What size is the circuit?
How do you know the circuit is enough to handle the welder?
What plug did he get for the cord?

There is, I believe a ground in the fuse box but not in the receptacle. The welder draws 40 amps, 230 volts. The plug he got for the welder is of the same type as the receptacle. (three prong, all the blades are streight. center is streight up and down, the oter two form a v shape with eachother).

It sounds like he is trying to plug this welder into a range or dryer circuit? Is that the case?

I agree it sounds like a dryer circuit.
Do not use this circuit.

Is this a stick welder?
If so install the proper 50 amp circuit for this welder.

The shape of the receptacle unfortunately doesn't tell else whether it was wired correctly in the first place.

You need to get a 50A plug, receptacle, and cable.
You can use a 40A or 50A circuit breaker.
