Basement wiring within a drop ceiling

Can I go diagonally across joists if they are covered by a drop ceiling or does it still have to be at 90 angles along the joists.

Thanks for your help.

There is no rule that says the wire has to be run at a 90 degree angle to the joists whether or not a ceiling will be installed. Wires are required to be in bored holes through joists in unfinished basements but not in finished ones which implies you can staple them to the bottom of the joists if a suspended ceiling is installed.

I prefer to use bored holes anyway and keep the cables running at approximately right angles simply to avoid having the job look like a rats nest of wire.
