Subpanel main breaker conversion possible?

Is it possible to install a main breaker, meaning one like in the main panel that cuts power to the buses, in a sub panel that just has lugs? I have read http://experts.about.com/q/Electrica...b-Panels-4.htm that it is not, but Rex Cauldwell's book seemed to indicate otherwise. Just curious if all I have to do is buy the $25 100 A two pole breaker for my Murray panel and install it properly.

It depends on the design on the panel. Some panels will allow for a 2-pole breaker to be inserted into the branch position, locked in position (main breakers require a special placement) and be back fed.
