Is new 14-2 Romex (NM) getting thinner?

I just bought a new roll of 14-2 at Home Depot. I was amazed at how thin the copper appears to be comparred to the leftover 14-2 I am using. Is this just my imagination or are they somehow selling thinner 14-2 nowadays? I thought that 14-2 had to be a specified diameter (circular mils).

AWG 14 wire is .064084 diameter. If it's any other diameter it's not #14. The insulation on newer wire does make it look smaller.

Are you sure your other wire isn't #12?

I'll bring a piece into work and have it measured. The older stuff is definitely 14 AWG.

Probably the former.

#12 used to have white sheathing.
Are you sure you aren't comparing #12 to #14?

I measured the wire using a calibrated micrometer.
It should be 0.06484
It measures 0.06250

I would think that there is either a minimum or a tolerance on the requirement. Anyone know?

I mistyped. It's 0.064084
The difference is 0.001584
