Wire price?

Are the big stores like Home Depot or Lowes the cheapest place to buy wire by the foot for DIYer's?

I need about 160 feet of #8 stranded copper wire. (thhn) I've found some pretty good deals online if I want to buy in 500 foot rolls.......but I don't need that much.

Home depot has it for about .42 cents a foot. Is that about the best I can do locally?
Thanks,
Phil

unless you are a contactor, or have a fed tax # you will have to buy it retail. you can still go to the contactors counter at any electrical sales counter and probably get a better deal.

Make a few phone calls to supply stores and ask for their per foot price. Last time I called around in the Knoxville TN area, Home Depot/Lowes prices came out the best, but your mileage may vary.

If you want annealed copper, you might have to go to an electrical supplier.
Retail stores tend to carry hard copper because it is cheaper and they look at price not utility.
