NEC for "old work"

I recently added an outlet and a couple of closet lights. I had to fish the wires within the walls for the outlet and the light switches, Obviously the NM-B cable is just hanging out in the stud bays without stapling. The "old work" plastic boxes don't have clamps or connectors. Does the NEC allow this or is it silent.

NM-B does not have to be stapled when it is fished into a finished wall. Staple it properly anywhere that you have access to the studs.

The NEC allows this. The walls are considered the means of securing the cable. The old work box should have a means of securing the cable where it enters, which is often just a piece of plastic.
