black soot on wires

Doing some renovation work, removed a plug from the box and noticed that the bare ground wire and the exposed ends of the white and black wires are covered in a layer of black carbonish film. Checked a few more outlets and the same thing has happened there. What would cause this problem?

Sounds as if you have had a lightning strike. Have you lost any sound gear, appliances, etc. during storms lately?

Purchase a circuit tester. It looks like a plug with 3 lights on it. When you plug it in, the legend on the plug will tell you if you have either an open ground, bad neutral, etc. I would check each outlet in the house just to make sure none of the wiring has been compromised.

Sounds like you found the location of a "draft" in your house.

You will see the same effect, on carpet and around windows where drafts to the outside are....

Dnk...

I'm with Larry. We had a lightning strike several years ago, and now the grounds have a black sooty appearance, even on the circuits that tested fine by an electrician afterwards.
