NM Stapling to Joists?

I'm running some 8/3 with ground NM to garage from my main panel in my basement. The cable will need to cross at 90 degrees to the first floor floor joists. Do I need to bore a hole in each joist (about 30 of em!) or can I staple them to the bottom of the floor joists. I have a suspended ceiling in the basement, with gridwork about 4-5 inches below the floor joists. TIA,
Bob

As long as the cable ISN'T exposed you can staple to the bottom of the joists. Being above a suspended ceiling qualifies as unexposed.
